The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), established in 1900, is the largest of the 11 colleges that comprise the Academy of Iowa, with 37 departments spanning the visual, performing, literary, and cinematic arts; humanities; natural and mathematical sciences; social and behavioral sciences; and communication disciplines.

Office of Academic Programs and Student Development
Located in Schaeffer Hall and at the center of campus on the Pentacrest, the Function of Academic Programs and Student Evolution is an integral office of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The office, led by the associate dean for undergraduate didactics, welcomes undergraduate students who take questions or who demand more than information about the many CLAS resources that support student learning and achievement. Staff also is available to talk with students.

GE CLAS Core
Students entering the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who wish to earn a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Available of Fine Arts (B.F.A.), or Available of Music (B.M.) caste must consummate the requirements of the Full general Education CLAS Core in improver to the requirements of a major and other UI and CLAS graduation requirements.

CLAS Units and Academic Programs
Undergraduate Majors, Minors, and Certificates
The Higher of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) has 37 departments and offers about 70 undergraduate majors, 70 minors, and 21 interdisciplinary certificate programs.
In addition, CLAS students may declare a number of majors offered by other undergraduate colleges at the UI, with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences granting the degree. The Tippie College of Business offers a major in economics (B.A. and B.S.), and with the Higher of Liberal Arts and Sciences, sponsors a major in enterprise leadership (B.A.). The Carver College of Medicine offers majors in biochemistry (B.A. and B.S.) and in microbiology (B.S.); and the Higher of Education offers a major in science studies (B.S.). CLAS also works closely with the College of Pedagogy which offers a Teacher Didactics Program that requires a major in a related area of education (B.A.) designed to lead to licensure at the secondary level. These students likewise must complete a related CLAS major to earn the didactics caste, such as a major in fine art, English language, mathematics, the sciences and social sciences, and in diverse earth languages. These programs are designed for students interested in didactics centre or high school. Students who begin their study in the Higher of Liberal Arts and Sciences may apply to degree programs in other colleges at the University of Iowa. If they are accepted, they may earn undergraduate degrees in business (B.B.A.) or nursing (B.S.Northward.); a B.S. with a major in medical laboratory scientific discipline, nuclear medicine technology, or radiation sciences; or a professional person degree in pharmacy (Pharm.D.). Students who are interested in earning a professional or graduate degree in addition to a bachelor'southward degree may utilise for early on admission or to combined caste programs offered through partnerships betwixt CLAS and other UI colleges.
